Spouting Horn: Kauai's South Shore Blowhole

By · Updated October 2026

Spouting Horn is one of Kauai's easiest and most popular free attractions, a lava tube on the Poipu coast that funnels incoming waves into a tall geyser, complete with a moaning, hissing sound the Hawaiians tied to legend. It takes 15 minutes to see, makes a good sunset stop, and pairs neatly with a Poipu beach day. As of October 2026, check Lawai Road access before you go.

What causes the spout

As waves surge into a submerged lava tube, water is forced up and out of a hole in the rock shelf, shooting a plume that can reach 50 feet on a good swell. A second, smaller vent produces the eerie groaning sound. Legend says it is a giant lizard (moo) trapped beneath the rocks.

When to go

The spout is biggest when south-shore surf is up, generally in summer. Late afternoon into sunset is the best time, when the plume catches golden light. Any day works, but a bigger swell means a bigger show, so check the surf report.

Visiting and safety

There is a free parking lot and a railed viewing area on Lawai Road, so it is accessible and safe when you stay behind the railings. Lawai Road was badly damaged by Hurricane Lowell, so as of October 2026 check that it is open before you drive out. Do not climb onto the wet rocks. The shelf is slippery and waves are unpredictable. It is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly.

Combine it with Poipu

Spouting Horn sits just past the Poipu resorts, so fold it into a south-shore afternoon: snorkel at Poipu Beach, browse the Kukuiula shops, catch the spout at sunset, then have dinner at Tidepools or Merriman's (The Beach House is closed until further notice). A cluster of craft and jewelry vendors often sets up near the lot.

Nearby stops

The National Tropical Botanical Garden (reserved tours from the Lawai visitor center) and Prince Kuhio Park are moments away, and Koloa town's history and shave ice are a short drive inland, easy add-ons for a south-shore day.
