Kauai Snorkeling: 9 Best Spots & Tours (2026)

Kauai snorkeling is seasonal: the north shore is glassy in summer, and the south shore is your safe bet in winter. These are the best spots and tours for every skill level.

Hurricane Lowell recovery (as of October 21, 2026): Haena State Park reopened October 15 (reservations required), but Kokee and Waimea Canyon state parks, most other Kauai state parks, the Kalalau Trail past mile 2, all state camping, and Secret Falls remain closed, and Port Allen's small boat harbor is only partly open. See our what's open on Kauai page, and check DLNR state parks, openkauai.org, and your tour operator before you go.

Best snorkeling spots on Kauai

Tunnels (Makua) and Anini shine in summer, Poipu Beach is reliable year-round, and Lydgate's protected pond suits beginners and kids. As of late October 2026 the road past Hanalei is open again, though parking near Tunnels is limited, so Anini and Poipu remain the easy picks. Lawai Road to Lawai (Beach House) reef is badly damaged; check access.

Best Kauai snorkeling tours

Na Pali catamaran tours from Port Allen stop at remote reefs unreachable from shore. They run reduced schedules after Hurricane Lowell, and the small boat harbor and Kikiaola Harbor are closed, so confirm with your operator.

Seasonal conditions

Snorkel the north shore May to September and the south shore October to April, and always check surf reports before entering the water.

Beginner tips

Start at Lydgate's reef-protected pond or Poipu on a calm morning; rent gear in Kapaa or Poipu and never snorkel alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anini on the north shore and Poipu on the south are the reliable spots right now; Tunnels (Makua) is cut off by road closures.
