Where to Stay in Kauai: Best Areas & Places for 2026

Where you stay in Kauai shapes your whole trip because the island is bigger than it looks and there is no fast way across it. Most first-timers choose between Poipu (south), Kapaa (east), and Princeville/Hanalei (north).

Low-rise hotels and coconut palms along Kauai's Coconut Coast

Poipu, best for first-timers and families

The sunniest, driest corner of Kauai, with calm beaches and plenty of resorts and condos. It is the safest all-round choice for a first visit. Waimea Canyon is normally an easy day trip from here, but its state parks are closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell (as of October 2026).

Kapaa & the Coconut Coast, best value and central

The east side is the most central base, closest to the airport, with the best food-truck scene and easy drives both north and south.

Princeville & Hanalei, best for scenery and couples

The north shore is the lushest, most dramatic region, perfect for honeymooners, though it gets more rain and is farthest from the airport.

Should you split your stay?

For trips of seven nights or more, splitting between the south and north shores cuts driving time and lets you experience both sides of the island.
