Kayaking in Kauai: Rivers, Coast & Na Pali

By · Updated October 2026

Kauai has kayaking for every level, from a calm river paddle suitable for kids to one of the world's great sea-kayaking trips along the Na Pali Coast. Where and when you paddle matters a lot for safety, and some options are limited after Hurricane Lowell as of October 2026, so this guide breaks down the main choices by difficulty.

Hurricane Lowell recovery (as of October 21, 2026): Haena State Park reopened October 15 (reservations required), but Kokee and Waimea Canyon state parks, most other Kauai state parks, the Kalalau Trail past mile 2, all state camping, and Secret Falls remain closed, and Port Allen's small boat harbor is only partly open. See our what's open on Kauai page, and check DLNR state parks, openkauai.org, and your tour operator before you go.

Wailua River (easy)

The Wailua is Hawaii's only navigable river and the best beginner paddle: flat, calm water leading to the Secret Falls landing. Rent kayaks (about $50 to $70) or join a guided tour. Commercial tours and rentals cannot operate on Saturdays or Sundays, so weekends are private paddlers only. As of October 2026 the Secret Falls trail is closed and kayakers cannot land at the Fern Grotto.

Hanalei River and Bay (easy to moderate)

On the north shore, the Hanalei River offers a scenic, gentle paddle through a wildlife refuge, and calm summer days allow paddling in Hanalei Bay itself. Conditions change with the surf, so go on flat mornings and check reports.

Na Pali Coast sea kayak (expert)

The 17-mile Na Pali sea-kayak trip is a bucket-list expedition, and a serious one, run with experienced guides in a season of about April to October. It is a full, physically demanding day on open ocean with landings on remote beaches. Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park has been closed since Hurricane Lowell, so check with outfitters before planning around it. This is not for casual paddlers; go with a licensed outfitter.

What to bring and know

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, a dry bag, and water shoes. Morning is best everywhere on Kauai, before wind and afternoon showers build. On rivers, watch for flash-flood risk after rain; on the ocean, respect surf reports and never paddle beyond your ability.

Choosing your paddle

Families and first-timers should stick to the Wailua or Hanalei rivers. Fit, experienced paddlers who want a real challenge can book the guided Na Pali trip in season once the park reopens. Either way, Kauai's water is warm and the scenery is hard to beat.

Frequently Asked Questions
