Kauai Luaus: Smith Family, Grand Hyatt & More

By · Updated October 2026

A luau is a Hawaiian feast and celebration, and attending one on Kauai is a fun, family-friendly way to experience island food and Polynesian performance. Kauai has several standouts, from the garden-set Smith Family Luau to resort shows at the Grand Hyatt and the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach. This guide compares them so you can choose the right fit for your group and budget.

Hurricane Lowell recovery (as of October 21, 2026): Haena State Park reopened October 15 (reservations required), but Kokee and Waimea Canyon state parks, most other Kauai state parks, the Kalalau Trail past mile 2, all state camping, and Secret Falls remain closed, and Port Allen's small boat harbor is only partly open. See our what's open on Kauai page, and check DLNR state parks, openkauai.org, and your tour operator before you go.

What to expect at a luau

Many luaus include a traditional imu ceremony (unearthing a pig roasted underground), though Luau Ka Hikina does not. Expect a buffet of kalua pork, poi, lomi salmon, and island sides, an open bar with mai tais, and a Polynesian revue with hula and fire dancing. Plan on about three hours from check-in to the final fire number.

Smith Family Garden Luau

Set in the Smith family's tropical gardens along the Wailua River, this long-running family-run luau feels more intimate and cultural than resort shows. It runs select nights and includes a tram ride through the gardens. It is a favorite for those who want authenticity over spectacle.

Resort luaus: Grand Hyatt & Sheraton

The Grand Hyatt's Havaiki Nui Luau in Poipu and Luau Ka Hikina at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort near Kapaa are polished oceanfront productions, handy if you are staying nearby. As of October 2026 the Coconut Beach resort is closed after Hurricane Lowell and expected to reopen at the end of the month, so confirm the luau is running. The Auli'i Luau at the Sheraton Kauai in Poipu is paused.

Cost and booking

Expect roughly $150 to $215 per adult, with discounts for children. The Smith Family Garden Luau is $150 plus state park fees. Luaus sell out in peak season and only run certain nights, so book well ahead. Arriving early gets you better seating and time for the crafts, lei-making, and imu ceremony where there is one.

Tips for a great night

Come hungry, bring a light layer for after sunset, and mention dietary needs in advance (most offer vegetarian options). Sit closer to the stage for the fire finale. It is a celebration, so join the hula lesson if one is offered.
