Kauai Botanical Gardens: Allerton, McBryde & Limahuli
By Rick Kennerknecht · Updated October 2026
Kauai is home to several of the National Tropical Botanical Garden's finest sites, and they are among the island's most beautiful and educational stops. From the sculpture-dotted Allerton Garden that appeared in Jurassic Park to the ancient terraces of Limahuli on the north shore, these gardens show off Hawaii's plants, history, and conservation work. Several reopened in October 2026 after Hurricane Lowell with new access rules, noted below.
Hurricane Lowell recovery (as of October 21, 2026): Haena State Park reopened October 15 (reservations required), but Kokee and Waimea Canyon state parks, most other Kauai state parks, the Kalalau Trail past mile 2, all state camping, and Secret Falls remain closed, and Port Allen's small boat harbor is only partly open. See our what's open on Kauai page, and check DLNR state parks, openkauai.org, and your tour operator before you go.
Allerton Garden (Poipu)
This south-shore garden in the Lawai Valley is famous for its rooms of tropical plants, water features, statuary, and the giant Moreton Bay fig trees seen in Jurassic Park. It is visited only by reserved guided tour from the NTBG visitor center in Lawai, which reopened on October 19, 2026. Guides cover its royal and estate past.
McBryde Garden (Poipu)
Sharing the Lawai Valley with Allerton, McBryde is the NTBG's scientific heart, home to the largest collection of native Hawaiian plants and rare species. Since the October 19 reopening it runs reserved tours from the Lawai visitor center rather than self-guided visits, so book ahead.
Limahuli Garden (North Shore)
Set beneath the towering cliffs near Haena, Limahuli preserves ancient Hawaiian agricultural terraces and native forest, with a self-guided trail and wide valley-to-ocean views. It reopened on October 15, 2026, open Tuesday to Saturday, with shuttle access recommended because Haena State Park has no self-parking right now. It is a moving lesson in traditional land stewardship.
Na Aina Kai and others
Beyond the NTBG sites, Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens on the north shore blends formal gardens, a hardwood forest, and whimsical bronze sculptures across hundreds of acres, offered via guided tours. Confirm tour dates directly with the garden. Each garden has a distinct personality worth a half-day.
Planning your visit
Reserve tours ahead, especially for Allerton, McBryde, and Na Aina Kai, and plan Limahuli around its Tuesday to Saturday schedule. Wear closed shoes and bring water and bug spray. Gardens are excellent rainy-day and hot-day options, offering shade, culture, and beauty regardless of the weather.
