The area

The west side is Kauai's dry, rural, old-plantation corner, nearest to Waimea Canyon and the Port Allen harbor where most Na Pali Coast tours depart. As of October 2026, Waimea Canyon, Kokee and Polihale are closed after Hurricane Lowell and boat tours run on reduced schedules, so check our what's open page first. It is far from the resort scene, which is exactly why people choose it.

Booking notes

Expect character over scale: fewer rooms, more personality, and a setting the big brands cannot match. Inventory is small, so dates sell out earlier than at the large resorts. Kauai-wide, the cheapest windows are late April to early June and September to mid-December; whale season (December to April) and summer carry premiums. A rental car is near-essential from any base on the island; see our car rental guide and the trip cost calculator to budget the whole stay.

Beaches nearby

  • Glass Beach (Curiosity): A quirky west-side cove near Port Allen strewn with tumbled sea glass.
  • Polihale Beach (Sunsets & space): Miles of remote sand beneath the Na Pali cliffs, reached by a rough 4x4 road.
